1. But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?

Juliet appears at her window, 5 meters above Romeo who’s standing on the ground beneath it.

Do you want to:

(a) climb the vine for a quick kiss?

(b) step back a bit and talk to her?

Climb the vine

Romeo is 180cm tall and weighs 50kg.

The vines are on a trestle in three separate sections.

Each section will support Romeo’s weight for a maximum of 3 minutes.

The vertical stack of trestles will support his weight for a maximum of 7 minutes

Romeo can climb the trestle to Juliet’s window in 4 minutes.

Additionally, there’s a Capulet patrol which he’s made sure avoid for this short tryst. It will return in 10 minutes.

Q1 Can Romeo climb the trestle and reach the window without falling and injuring himself?

Yes/No

Q2 How long can he hang around at the top before the trestle comes off the wall?

(a) 5 min (b) 3 min (c) won’t make it

Q3 Will the patrol catch him in the act?

Yes/No

Correct answers go to 3 Incorrect answer goes to 2.

Step back and chat

Juliet is 5m off the ground, looking down at Romeo.

There’s a Gargoyle directly beneath the window. This restricts Juliet’s view of Romeo. She won’t see him if he’s less than 1m from the wall.

However, there’s also a security camera attached to the wall just above her window. Its view creates a triangle, the vertex (top point) at the camera lens, 6m above the ground, leading down to its base starting 4m from the wall and ending 10m from the wall.

Romeo is 180cm tall.

How far from the wall can Romeo stand to hold a conversation with Juliet and avoid being seen by the camera?

(a) 3m (b) 2m (c) won’t work. He’ll need to climb the trestle.

Correct answer - go to 3 Incorrect answer go to 2

2. Whoops! The patrol is chasing Romeo

Romeo is running at a speed of 15km/hour.

The Capulet patrol is running at a speed of 10km/hr. Mainly because their 1m long swords are getting in the way.

There’s an outer wall that is 3m tall. Romeo climbed this earlier to get into the grounds to chat with his young love. It is 250m away.

Romeo can scale the wall in about 30 seconds.

How to work this out
Workings Distance Time to cover
Speed Romeo travels at 15 km 1 hour
Break down to minutes 15km 60 minutes
Break down to meters 15000m 60 minutes
Get to single digit minutes by dividing both sides by 10 1500m 6 minutes

Okay, so Romeo travels 1500m in 6 minutes.

Workings Distance Time to cover
Divide both sides by 6 to get distance in 1 minute 1500/6 = 250m 1 minute
Add 30 seconds to climb the wall   1 minute 30 seconds

Answer Romeo is on top of the wall in 1 minute, 30 seconds.

What about the patrol?

Workings Distance Time to cover
Speed of Capulet Patrol 10km 1 hour
Break down to minutes 10km 60 minutes
Break down to meters 10000m 60 minutes
Divide both sides by 10 to remove last zero and get us to single digit minutes 1000m 6 minutes

So the Capulet patrol travels 1000m in 6 minutes

Workings Distance Time to cover
Divide both sides to get distance in 1 minute 1000/6 = 166ish metres 1 minute

But we really need time to cover 250m, and this doesn’t really do that. There’s a faster way.

Workings Calculation Distance Time to cover
Capulet patrol travels…   1000m 360 seconds (6 minutes)
Distance to travel   250m
Divide 1000m by 250m 4
Divide time by 4 360 / 4   90 seconds
Distance and time to reach wall   250m 90 seconds

Answer: The Capulet patrol reach the wall in 1.5 minutes.

Romeo Escapes! Yay for Romeo!
